Responsibility for accommodation and support

An asylum seeker with a disability has the right to adapted accommodation. The main responsibility lies with the Swedish Migration Board to provide accommodation with the necessary adaptations during the asylum period.

If there are exceptional reasons, for example extensive support and care needs that require home care or a disability that requires special housing, exceptions can be made or supplemented in various ways. The social welfare committee is then required to consider the intervention in accordance with the Social Welfare Act.

In practice, there are challenges regarding the availability of fully adapted accommodation, and situations may arise where people with disabilities need special support to safeguard their rights.

You contact: The Swedish Migration Board and tell them about the asylum seeker's disability and what the daily care needs are with housing adaptations, aids and support to function in everyday life. You then take it forward to the next level in consultation with each other if necessary.
