The right to education

 

Children and young people seeking asylum have the right to attend preschool and school on the same terms as other children and young people in Sweden. However, they are not forced to do so. For children with disabilities, there is a requirement for the school to adapt the teaching so that the child/young person can participate. For those with intellectual and severe disabilities, there is an adapted primary/secondary school. There are also special schools for children and young people who have visual and/or hearing impairments. You can get help with this at the respective school/municipality.

 

• Preschool: From the time the child turns one year old.

• Primary school: From the year the child turns six.

• Upper secondary school: From the year the young person turns 16.

 

 

What you need to do:

 

• You can contact the municipality where you live to register your child for preschool/school. You can also ask your reception unit for help with this.

• You can give your consent to the Swedish Migration Board to send information about your child to the municipality to facilitate the process.

 

 

Why school is important

 

• Schooling provides a meaningful everyday life and a chance to meet other children.

• The children learn Swedish and gain an insight into Swedish society.

• School can be a safe place during an uncertain time.
